This week, I had the pleasure of taking my youngest kid to her kindergarten orientation. It was so cool to see Maya checking out the kiddie classroom, strolling through the hallways, and inspecting the model rocket and aquarium displays on the walls!

I can’t wait to hear about all the wondeful things she’ll be picking up; she’s a real talker, so I know she’ll tell me everything.

Sure, I know she’ll make some mistakes along the way (we all do), but I’ll be glad as long as she learns from them and tries not to make the same ones twice.

Unfortunately . . . this lesson doesn’t seem to have sunk in for a friend of mine, Gladys, who’s been getting really horrible, crank phone calls for the past 2 months. I’ve tried telling her, “. . . you can locate the owner of any phone . . . if you know where to look.”

Searching For The Telephone Number

Your first stop should be a “reverse phone number directory.” Plenty of these phone directories are now accessible on the world wide web. Usually, they ask you to enter the entire phone or cell number, including the area code, and hit “Search.” If the number is a published land line, you may get the data you want, including the name of the owner and her/ his current address. Even if the number is unpublished, you can still get it from Intelius.com.

If you’re in a good mood, your search can stop at that point. You may, however, need to look at this another angle.

Usually, the reason you’ll run into a snag is that the number belongs to a cell phone. Because there is no central database of cell phone numbers that’s free of charge, a free reverse phone directory cannot return information on those numbers. As well, you may not be able to get data on landline numbers that are unlisted or non-published. I mention that only because Intelius has probably the largest database (more than 2 billion entries) and is able to find upwards of 90% of unlisted phone numbers. So, don’t bother trying multiple reverse phone directories in order to find the owner of a phone number, either. Most use the same databases, so if you don’t score results at one then you won’t fare any better at another site.

Finding the Phone’s Owner

Instead, you may have to use a paid site. For a reasonable fee, you can access more search options to get the information you need to find someone’s cell phone number. Some databases gives you accurate, up-to-date information using both land line and cell phone searches.

Other exclusive databases include even broader coverage of the entire U.S. with more noteworthy results than you might find on most other websites. They also give you free search assistance and access to their expanded people search databases.

The web is such an intricate, vibrant and advanced (some would say) “animal.” But, through the intelligent use of our personal PCs and Macs, we can accomplish so much from our living rooms.

From acquiring endless data on any topic, to tracing people we have lost touch with long ago. So many things we used to do without a second thought, we would dread doing now days after being exposed to the Internet. Our computers have made it all so convenient.

We shop at home, we bank at home, we order food online, we read online, and we even send letters electronically. There’s not even a reason to pick up the phone if you have Instant Messenger. We live in a world made simple by computers and cyberspace. But, just how much of our information is floating around on the internet?

Some suggest they only used peer-to-peer (P2P) clients because they were safer. However, the following video blows away that whole idea by showing how easy it is to waltz right on into someone’s Shareaza client.

To take matters further, about a year ago, I wanted to get in touch with a buddy from college.

I hadn’t seen him for more than few years (not wanting to reveal my age!), and apparently lost his email address. That’s always a bummer. No worries.

Anyone can resort to tracing people on their personal computer. Some websites even offer a free search option at first. I took full advantage of this. I was able to locate his most current address. Now, just to be clear, this process can be a bit tedious if your subject has a very common name such as Brian Smith. Many of these will pop up. If you know their middle initial, use it.

Anyway, this process of tracing people on the web proved handy and effective for me. This got me to thinking. How easy can we all find out so much about one another? This is a down-side to the Internet. I don’t know that I want everyone having so much access. Anyone with a computer and Internet access can find me, as long as they have my first and last name.

You can even purchase online services that will really help you with this process. From reverse addresses, to social security numbers, to current phone numbers; it all can be found. So how safe are we from the criminals of the world?

I won’t dispute that tracing people online is convenient and sometimes a helpful service. But, take a look at most sites you visit. They’re tracing cell phones all the time. That’s why ads pertaining to your current location constantly pop up. They have your IP address. Yes indeed, the Internet is helpful, but it’s also harmful in ways. Surf with caution!

As long as you got the area code and the seven digit number, you should be able to locate any number’s owner . . . if you know where to look.
